In a grassy field
a squirrel worked all morning
burying acorns.
But then…
children came to play,
and the squirrel was forced
to run away.
The squirrel climbed up
the nearest tree
and sat on a limb
staring down
annoyed……
She had hidden all of her acorns
in a preschool playground.
Sigh.
Even squirrels make mistakes. ~ms

Squirrels are eternal optimists though and they always seem to come out on top.

That’s true. Squirrels are very innovative. Given time, they can figure anything out….that is why there is no such thing as a real squirrel-resistant bird feeder!

When a child came running, arms open for a big embrace, and yelling in delight, “it’s a squirt! (meaning squirrel)”….the squirrel’s face was priceless. Uh oh.

Lots of bird life so very little in the way of cute animals. But there are the nocturnal hedgehogs and possums. 🙂

Great story, Mary. I watched a squirrel this fall collecting mushrooms, many trips all day long – the little purple ones, which I know are poisonous. I thought, they must be able to eat them…but maybe a mistake was made. Food for thought. 😉

Out of curiosity, I just searched for some info on squirrels and mushrooms. Not to worry. Apparently, your squirrel know exactly what he/she was doing. Probably proud to bring home an especially delicious meal for the family. Here is the article I found:

Squirrels are very clever and usually can figure their way out of anything. The squirrel in these photo was having a rough day….but I am sure she figured it all out in the end!
