Duck Quack Reprimand

What?
Where is our bread?
You brought a camera instead?
How thoughtless is that!
duck-reprimand
Now….
Have you anything to say
in your own defense
before we quack you away?
Two-ducks
Yes, actually
I do have something to say.
You don’t need more bread.
Living in a pond
behind a nice restaurant,
the leftover food
must have affected your head.
So, I’ll take a stand…
I refuse to accept your
duck quack reprimand!
fat-duck
You see….
All of the birds here
are getting a little fat.
Portly-duck
You’re not hungry, not starving,
so don’t be upset
because I’ve no bread
and be happy I’m holding
my camera instead.      ~ms

Appreciating the Writer Within

Appreciation 2012
Since it is the end of the year 2012, I decided to make a little card in appreciation of all the wonderful bloggers that I have had the honor to meet this year through words and photos posted on WordPress. Because of you, I have been able to experience (in thought) beautiful people, places, and ideas from all around the world. I would not have been able to do this without you. I am so grateful that you acknowledged the writer/artist within you and took the time to share your visions and thoughts with me. Thank you.

I would also like to take this time to acknowledge the two awards that I was recently given.
VersatileOn December 11, I was nominated for “The Versatile Blogger award by  Secondhalfwoman.
Her blog is an interesting and thoughtful combination of  poetry, musings, and photographs. As I am also a “second half woman,”  I have visited her blog several times to see what’s new.

And then, on December 16—
I was kindly nominated for the “Very Inspiring Blogger Award” by Dear Kitty.  This blog features a wide range of topics–  “…On animals, peace and war, science, social justice, women’s issues, arts, and much more….”
Inspiring blogger
Now I know that the “rules” that came with these two awards require nominations of 15 more people (ummm…now that would be 30) for each award. But I don’t know which ones to choose, because there are too many great blogs that deserve to be recognized.
So, please accept my homemade “end of the year” card in appreciation of the Writer/Artist within us all.
——–
Life’s creative hand
within each soul is writing
a story with no book.
Thank  you for sharing!
Happy holidays to all
and
best wishes for the New Year!

Low-Tech Computer Screen Blockers

When too much time is spent on the computer and other important aspects of life are being ignored, my low-tech computer screen blockers are automatically activated. They are highly effective!
Computer-Screen-Blockers
If I attempt to remove them from my desktop and continue working, they will pop back up into position in a matter of seconds. Because there is absolutely no way to ignore or see around them, I am left with no choice but to leave my desk and go do something else.
These low-tech computer screen blockers are also extremely energy efficient. Although they need a little food and a litter box, they do not need to be plugged in or turned on. Without any assistance, they are ready to jump into action whenever and wherever they decide a computer intervention is necessary.
And wait…there’s more!
printer-cat
With one of the more advanced models that can switch from blocker to shredder, paper will also be periodically yanked out of the printer and destroyed (or carried away).
Hard-at-work

And then, the old excuse that “something  ate my homework” actually becomes the truth!
============
So….if you have the feeling that you are spending an excessive amount of time on your computer,  one of these awesome Siamese cat  screen blockers/office assistants might be able to help you break away.  Unlike the computer, they are very loving and they purr.

Squirrel Dilemma

In  a grassy field
a squirrel worked all morning
burying acorns.

But then…
children came to play,
and the squirrel was forced
to run away.

Revolt of the Green World

Story-1
It was one of the most beautiful Texas days that he had ever seen, so the young king of trees and bushes decided to wander outside to enjoy his green world. However, as he was soaking in the sunshine and breathing in the warm afternoon air, he began to hear a dark sort of whispering going on around him.

A cold chill ran across his shoulders. At first, he couldn’t believe what he was hearing, because he didn’t think anyone or anything in his kingdom had reason to be unhappy. He hoped that the angry voices were nothing more than sounds created by a breeze moving through the leaves.

Unfortunately for the king, the horrible things that he was hearing were true. Because he had ignored his green world for so long, many of his plants had become ugly and unruly. At first, all they wanted was to be trimmed and pruned, but eventually they grew thick and totally out-of-control. Soon a large group of untrimmed, unpruned bushes were talking about overgrowing the king and covering his entire castle with dead leaves and thorny vines.  They wanted revenge and thought the time for change had come. “Revolt,” the leaves murmured as the bushes swayed back and forth in a dance of angry anticipation—“Revolt!”  Story-2
Suddenly, without warning, a long branch reached out and slapped the king right across the middle of his face. “Hey! What do you think you are doing?” The king shouted and sneezed as he pulled several annoying green leaves out of his nose.  “How could you treat your king like this? How dare you!”

“What? We think that it is you who have mistreated us,” hissed one of the long, thin branches. “We were so beautiful when we were planted in the castle garden several years ago. We thought we were lucky. But now we are unhappy, because you didn’t pay enough attention to us. In fact, you stayed inside your castle day after day and forgot all about us. We needed to be cut, trimmed, and pruned. Now, because no one ever bothered to cut us back, we have grown up to be an extremely unpleasant, irritable group of bushes. There are so many annoying bugs crawling around in the darkness beneath us, we are miserable. This is why we have decided that you must now pay the price! You shall soon experience annihilation by our green overgrowth.”

“But, it’s not my fault,” the king argued. “I did hire a landscaping company to come out and take care of you.”

“Well…no one ever came here, as you can easily see by looking at our overgrown, twisted, tangled condition,” the bushes snarled. “So, we blame you!”
Story-3
It was then that the king realized he was in great danger. He looked around hoping he could call someone over to help him, but there was no one in sight.  “Uh-Oh,” the king nervously said to himself.  “This is serious. It looks like the end of my kingdom is near!”

In the past, all of the dangerous situations that the king had encountered were just simulations on his computer games. But this was actually happening! There are no instructions for handling plant attacks, so what is someone supposed to do in a situation like this? He felt lost and confused.

To make matters worse, the king had left his silver sword underneath his bed where it was of absolutely no use to anyone. As the bushes began to slowly drag him forward into their inner darkness, he knew that he had to come up with a workable plan, and fast!
Story-extra
“No, No, No! There is no way that I can let this happen to me! I will not stand for this!” he shouted out in a loud voice, momentarily startling the bushes.

He used this opportunity to quickly pull the branches from his arms, but his plan for a quick escape did not work. Because the ground was uneven and wet, he lost his footing, slipped, and fell over backwards. He wasn’t standing for it anymore; he was about to lose the battle lying down. A thorny branch quickly jumped out and wrapped itself around the king’s right ankle, once again dragging him closer to his leafy doom. The bushes had no intention of letting the king get away.
green-world_4
Luckily, the king’s mother had always told him that he should never give up and never give in, so he struggled back up onto his feet once more. Unfortunately, as soon as the bushes saw that he was about to free himself and run away, they sent out even more branches to wrap themselves around him.
green-world_5
Even though the king was starting to get extremely tired by this point, and the branches were poking and pinching him without mercy, he was not about to lose this battle. He continued to twist and bend the stubborn branches until they started to break under pressure. Then the king softly said, “Please stop attacking me, so that we can talk calmly about your problems. I know that we can solve anything, if we just work together.”

“No!” shouted the bushes loudly. “We don’t believe a word you say. We want to fight! We want revenge!”

Using his most powerful voice, the king sternly replied, “Beware! If you do not retreat, I am going to pull off your leaves one by one. Don’t make me do this! Also, I know how to use this stick as a deadly sword, so I am warning you one last time—behave!”
green-world_7
His brave words caused the wicked, killer bushes to get even more angry. So, the young king drew his stick sword and pointed it at them. “On guard! I’m not afraid to use this. Don’t push, pull, or fight with me anymore. I will cut you limb from limb. You’ll be sorry.”
green-world_8
He raised both of his arms and was about to swing his sword stick forward, when the bushes cried out—“O.K. Wait a minute. Stop! Please stop! Maybe we have had enough. This doesn’t make sense. We don’t want to be all chopped up. What good would that do? That is not what we want. If you agree to trim us and give us all a nice shape, we promise that we will be forever grateful and never attack you again. ”

“Agreed!” The young king sighed as he put his stick down. He was relieved because he did not want to fight. He wanted his plant kingdom to be peaceful and serene, and he certainly didn’t want to suffer through any more surprise plant attacks.

Before he left his garden that day, he assured the bushes that he would fire the old landscaping company (that never showed up), and personally do all of the castle garden trimming and pruning by himself from now on. The bushes swayed and shook their long, leafy branches to show their approval.
story-last
From that day forward, there has never been any more trouble in the castle garden. The king waters all of his plants and keeps them nicely trimmed.  His green world has become the paradise it was meant to be.

Covered with Cattitude

On Halloween night, when the first group of children walked up and saw me sitting quietly on the front porch —they stopped and decided to come no further.
I wasn’t growling,  hissing, or howling—but apparently, my calm cattitude was rather unnerving.
“WHAT are you?” asked a brave ninja, as he waved his plastic sword with one hand and clutched his bag of candy tightly in the other. A little princess and a hairy werewolf stood close beside him, for protection.cat
“I’m just a cat…meow,” I said in a soft, high-pitched voice. “In fact, I think I might be the long lost sister of the ‘Cat in the Hat’. Yes, I think that is true. You’ve heard of him, haven’t you? He travels around with Thing One and Thing Two.”
The ninja frowned thoughtfully and then he replied, “I don’t think the ‘Cat in the Hat’ has a sister. I have never heard of that.”
“Of course not,” I sighed. “No one knows me. I am really quite shy. That’s why, most of the time, I just hide inside. But, tonight—here I am. Now, what should I do? Aren’t you going to say ‘trick or treat,’ so I can give candy to you?”
“Ok. Yes. I forgot. Trick or Treat.” he replied.
The ninja opened his bag and I put in some M&Ms (which instantly met with his approval).
Then the little princess walked forward—“You’re really a cat?”
As I gave her some candy, I said, “ Yes, I am that!”
“Goodbye kitty cat,” the princess did say.
And the werewolf growled “thank you” as they walked away.
Until next year…..meeeoooow.

Behold the Inner Beast

Halloween is an opportunity (and a perfect excuse) for people to dress up and become what they usually are not.  Last year, when a stray werewolf jumped out in front of me, his appearance immediately took my breath away. The simple addition of a hairy rubber mask and hands had successfully unleashed his inner beast. Power! The transformation from civilized man into wild animal was complete—until he stopped growling and allowed me to take his picture.
Then, alas, the spell was broken.
Werewolf
A week from now, October 31st, 2012,  it will be Halloween night once again. People are already decorating their houses and yards with spider webs,  jack-o-lanterns, ghosts, and other spooky things. Children are trying on their costumes and practicing frightening poses, sometimes scaring themselves and the family pet too (actually, in spite of the mask, the dog in this photo recognized the young boy almost immediately).
Zombie boy
I know it’s going to be great fun, on the night when imagination runs wild, to watch the known and unknown come out to play once more!

Mysterious Witch of Shenandoah

I have wanted to visit the Shenandoah National Park for quite some time and take a trip down Skyline Drive. Unfortunately,  the weather started to shift on the day that I planned to go. When I listened to the morning weather report, it said the humidity in the Shenandoah mountain area was 100%  (I think that is a creative way of saying it’s raining).
Oh well.
Luckily, when I got there an hour later, the sun broke through the clouds long enough to accentuate the autumn colors of orange, yellow, and red leaves on the trees.  So beautiful! I decided to stop at one of the scenic overlooks and sit on the stone wall there,  so I could take in the awesome sight for a while.
Only a few moments went by before an excited voice broke into my reverie— “Mom…Dad….come over here and look!  Wow! There’s a witch down there and she’s moving pretty fast.”
Shenandoah-Witch
I turned to my right and saw a young boy (about 6 years old) pointing down to the valley below. Sure enough, there was a shadowy image that looked like a witch flying over the treetops.  But, as soon as the boy’s mom saw it, she quickly said,  “No. That’s not a witch. It’s just a shadow made by the clouds passing by overhead.”
“Oh.” The boy’s voice sounded slightly disappointed.
Hmmm….
Maybe it would have been more fun to say — “Aha! It’s almost Halloween. The witch probably came here to practice broom flying.  Maybe she wants to get it just right, so she doesn’t look silly on Halloween night!”
(Actually, knowing me, my children would have expected me to say something like that, and follow it with a story about what happens to witches who don’t practice).
The rest of my day in Shenandoah swung back and forth between sunlight and rain, from colorful to dark and foreboding. During the times when I stood in the shadow cast by the bewitching clouds above, I was glad I had brought my raincoat.

Shenandoah-Shadows
There are cabins, camping areas, hiking trails, and many other things to experience at the Shenandoah National Park.  It’s not too far from my house, so I will definitely return!

Wisdom of the Yawning Tree

Obese Fast Food Pigeons

Most of our fast food is filled with salt and saturated fat, and lacking in vital nutrients. That’s why eating fast food on a regular basis has been linked to medical conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, etc.  A super-size container of fries and a burger washed down with a large soft drink might be comfortably filling, but that kind of diet is not doing anything positive for our bodies (and that is an understatement).
Fast-food-pigeonSadly, other animals around us are also getting addicted to our sugary, salty, greasy fast food.  In Hawaii, there are countless outdoor eating areas because the weather is so beautiful. Sitting around in the grass underneath the tables, there are a lot of obese pigeons waiting for handouts (or accidental spills). Their diet is composed primarily of leftover fries, onion rings, chips, and pieces of bread.  These poor pigeons have gotten so fat that, when they do attempt to fly, they can only go a few feet before plopping back down onto the ground in exhaustion.  Truthfully, I think these birds are attracted to  fast food for the same reasons that people are—it’s convenient, easy to get, and its filling.

One day, I heard a restaurant employee ask a man to please stop feeding the birds. She kindly explained that our food doesn’t help them, it just makes them sick.  As the man threw the pigeons some more of his fries, he laughed and said, “There are too many of these birds anyway.”
Really?  Maybe the humans who created this greasy, salty, deleterious version of food also think that there are too many people in the world.
Just sayin’………

Aging in Slow Motion

She saw a wrinkle on her face
and some gray hairs on her head
she complained to Mother Nature
that growing old was just not fair.
Sigh…..
The next thing she knew
she was covered with salt
and permanently set in stone.

Now aging in slow motion
not one more word is said.
Be careful.
It happens.         ~ms                         (Photo taken at Luray Caverns, VA)

Allerton Garden Tropical Paradise

When I first saw the Allerton Garden in the Lāwa`i Valley on Kauai, I knew that I had found a slice of paradise on earth. Blue ocean, tropical flowers and trees, and warm  tradewinds—absolutely beautiful.
Allerton-Garden
The Allerton Garden is so stunning it almost seems unreal. When I found out that parts of Jurassic Park and The Pirates of the Caribbean (on Stranger Tides) were filmed in this beautiful garden, I wasn’t surprised. It would be extremely difficult to find a better place for a tropical fantasy adventure.
Ficus-Tree-and-Me
The roots of the Moreton Bay Fig tree are so large, that I was reduced to the size of a small child when I stood within them. As I hugged one of the large tree roots, all anxiety and worry melted away. Surrounded by the smell of earth and wood, I felt so protected. It was the first time that a tree has ever hugged me back like that!

And then—there are all the plants and colorful flowers. Words cannot accurately describe the various colors and shapes.
Allerton-Garden_3
Lotus-flower
Totally awesome.
If you ever travel to the island of Kauai, make sure to visit the Allerton Garden! If you enjoy the Allerton, you might also want to visit the McBryde and  Limahuli Garden & Preserve. Each one of these gardens on Kauai has its own unique appeal and the price of admission goes back to the maintenance  of the gardens.
In my opinion, it’s definitely worth it.

Rough Water Rising

Rough water rising
and coming our way.
What should we do….fight with each other?
That doesn’t make sense!
Rough-waterOur time together is limited by nature.
The average life expectancy for humans is not very long.
All who are alive today will soon be gone.
So why are we arguing and fighting?
What does this accomplish?
I don’t understand.  Are we bored?

Birds Watching People

Birds watching people
watching birds
at Kilauea Lighthouse
on the Island of Kauai.
watching-you
I didn’t realize, until I uploaded my photos and took a closer look–that I was being closely observed. I thought I was watching the birds, never realizing that the birds were also interesting in watching me–one of the many people who had wandered into their territory that day.
The area around the Kilauea Lighthouse is also a wildlife sanctuary and a safe haven for numerous seabirds.  Looking down from the lighthouse area, at times you will also be able to see dolphins, humpback whales, and Hawaiian monk seals. In the photo below (if you can zoom in on it), all of the small “white dots” on the mountainside are birds.
It is an absolutely beautiful place.

Tribute to Anthurium

Sensual flower
almost unbelievable
reproduction of…..
anthurium
Botanical Name: Anthurium andraeanum
Although this flower is native to South America (Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru), the first time that I saw Anthurium was when I was visiting Hawaii.
At first, I didn’t think it was real—I couldn’t stop staring.
I reached out, touched it, and found it was live!
So I took a picture. Pictures last longer (or so I am told).
Such an interesting flower!
Purely and simply
Reminding me of something…
No need to say what.
